For the Instagram generation, hipster cafés are all the rage. Patrons today want something different in their eat-and-meet spots, something worth talking about. And hipster cafés deliver, breaking away from the norm with their décor, nondescript locations, lack of signage, eclectic serving platters and glassware, and often outrageous dishes on the menu.

Singapore is teeming with cafés, and there are a number of fabulous halal hipster cafés to choose from. Most of them take their coffee roasts seriously, and you can spend hours there working at their long communal tables. There are several options, but we’ve narrowed down the list to just our absolute favourites. Here is our list of halal hipster cafés you absolutely must check out in Singapore.

Inspired by Amsterdam (hence the capital ‘AM’ in its signage), I AM Café is owned by three Muslim friends, and the food is prepared with ingredients and methods acceptable to Islamic tradition. Haji Lane is chock-a-block with fabulous cafés, but I AM Café holds its own, and the canal prints on the walls will have you believing you are in the Dutch capital itself. The burger patties are charcoal-grilled and served hipster-style on wooden boards. The food is more comforting than gourmet, and the al fresco seating is great for people watching.

Location: 674 North Bridge Road, junction of North Bridge Road and Haji Lane

Nearest MRT: Bugis
