Lojain Badr Al-Refae, a Saudi fitness trainer, has launched the kingdom's first sports abaya brand, MULU athletics, according to Arab News.
Like her husband Mohammed Dakhil, also a fitness trainer, Lojain is passionate about fashion; she graduated in fashion design. When the couple returned from their stay in the US, they quickly found that they could not work out together as her abaya always got in the way.
“It wasn’t comfortable either in movement or when [we were] taking the kids out to play. I decided that we wanted to launch MULU,” Arab News quoted Lojain as saying.
The material used in MULU sports abayas is flexible, absorbs sweat and controls overheating. “I decided to come up with this design, an abaya that is comfortable and not clingy. The material is made specifically for MULU, from abroad,” Lojain said.
MULU's latest version of the sports abaya has a higher arch and is bike- and running-friendly. “The new high-arch abaya is great for hardcore runners,” Lojain said.
Women in Saudi Arabia were allowed into a sports stadium for the first time last September. This March, the Kingdom saw its first women's road race, in which more than 1,500 women hit the pavement for a three-kilometre course. In the same month, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told a US news station that wearing an abaya or hijab was a woman’s choice.
