Nurul Shamsul is the latest hijabi beauty queen to make history. The hijab proved to be no barrier to the Malaysian-Indonesian New Zealander when she entered the Miss Universe New Zealand competition and gracefully finished in fifth place.
“Alhamdulillah for 5th place! Thank you to everyone for all of the love and support,” Nurul announced on Instagram, also revealing that she learned about the result on her 21st birthday. “This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait for what Allah has planned for me!!!”
She added, “As a hijabi, I will be the first in New Zealand to make it to the finals and one of the first in the world to ever do so.”
Nurul is a published poet and currently studies psychology at the University of Waikato in New Zealand’s North Island.
The first hijab-wearing participant to compete in a Miss Universe pageant was Somali-American model Halima Aden. Halima competed in Miss America in 2016 and has since become a major international model.
